The Adelaide Hills district is a relatively young cool climate region, producing small quantities of very high quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The cool growing conditions and high altitude aspect of the vineyards produce wines of great elegance and delicacy. The Hills are only 20 minutes drive from the centre of Adelaide.

The first serious vineyard development in the Hills began in the early 1980s with producers of the calibre of Petaluma, Tim Knappstein, Henschke and Shaw and Smith establishing vineyards and wineries.
